Finally found a website which explained photoluminescence and the design and implementation of a photoluminescence experiment. Shall read up more on that for the beginning part of my CA1. I will then think hard about the applications of PL. Hope to get some help from Seng Ghee.

Emailed my proposal for my CA1 to Dr Teo Kie Leong and Mr Thomas Liew. Still waiting for a reply from them.

Dr Teo Kie Leong asked me for my timetable. There goes my free Fridays. Hehe.

First post:

Thursday (24/7/2003)

E-mailed Tan Seng Ghee to ask him about what I should do to prepare for the FYP. Responded by asking me to read up on photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL).

Searched through the internet regarding PL and EL. The problem is that there is too much information, that I don't know where to start from. This could due mainly to the fact that photoluminescence is mainly used in the photoluminescence spectra. The spectra is used to analyze materials and gain information at the microscopic level about the information.

Went to the science library and picked up two books:

1. Physics of Quantum Well Devices, B. R. Nag.
2. Devices based on low-dimensional semiconductor structures edited by Minko Balkanski

Started reading up the chapters on photoluminescence.

Friday (15/8/2003)

Met with Tan Seng Ghee to discuss the project with him at DSI. He explained to me what the whole FYP project is all about. Also told me the backup plan in case we don't get the material that is to be analyzed in time for my CA3. He also suggested that for my CA1, I make a literature survey about the applications of photoluminescence, with special emphasis on how it is applied in the study of spintronics. I shall discuss the contents of CA1 with Dr Teo Kie Leong soon.

Searched more information on photoluminescence online.
